Dragon Pool Feast

At Dragon Pool feast spread screens embroidered with cloud,

All music drowned in the emperor’s drumbeats loud.

Come back at midnight to hear the waterclock’s song,

The prince not drunken lay awake all the night long.

Note:Lady Yang(杨贵妃),former wife of the prince(寿王)became the emperor’s(唐玄宗)favorite concubine,so the prince could not fall asleep after the emperor’s feast.

From Day to Day

From day to day in splendor spring with sunlight vies,

The sloping hillside way sweet with apricot bloom.

When could my heart-string be as free from worldly ties

As the hundred-foot-long gossamer in the gloom?

Note:The poet asks why men and things should vie in splendor and flagrance,and whether it is worthwhile or not to be flee as the gossamer.

The End of the Sky

Spring is far,far away

Where the sun slants its ray.

If orioles have tear,

Wet highest flowers here!

Note:This quatrain may be said to be an elegy of spring,of the poet’s life and of his era.The place is far away and the time is late,even a happy bird would be saddened to shed tears on beautiful flowers.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

On the Tower of the City Wall

From hundred-foot-high city wall I look afar;

Beyond green willow branches sandy islets are.

I remember a student while young shed vain tears,

And a famed scholar roamed in the spring of his years.

I can’t forget white-haired General on the lake floating

After changing the face of the world he went boating.

An owl might feed on dead rats with good appetite,

But a phoenix would perch on trees of lofty height.

Note:The poet compares himself with two unsuccessful scholars,regrets his failure to realize his ideal like the general and shows his disdain for those who seek fortune and fame.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

A Sunny Evening after Rain

I look down on town wall from my retreat;

With spring just gone,summer weather is clear.

It’s Heaven’s will to pity green grass sweet;

In human world sunny evening’s held dear.

I can see afar from my tower high;

The parting rays make my small window bright.

The Southern birds find their nest again dry;

When they fly back,they feel their bodies light.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

To the Poet Drowned in the Southern Lake

The waves of the Southern Lake roll with bitter tears,

Your enchanted soul goes with the waves far away.

The ape on maple tree wails and then disappears.

The mountain fairy in ivy leaves would show you the way.

Your putrid body could not come to life again.

How could your soul get rid of the fishes’stinking smell?

But so long as your younger Southerners remain,

Their long long rope would bind the long long serpent fell.

Note:The poet,a loyal minister banished by the king of Chu(楚王)drowned himself in the Southern Lake 2000 years ago.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

Spring Rain

Gloomy in early spring,I lie still clad in white;

How much I miss our rendezvous now in sad plight!

Your rosy bower chills my heart when viewed in rain;

Back when dim lamplight is screened,lonely I remain.

Far on your way,you should be grieved when spring is late;

Deep in the night,I but dimly dream of my mate.

How could I send my love letter with two jade rings?

Could miles of clouds be pierced by a swan on the wings?

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

The Sunset Tower

Flowers and willows exhale sorrow to the sky,

I mount the tower higher and higher stage by stage.

I try to ask the lonely swan where he will fly.

Forgetting my own loneliness is in lonely age.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

Playing on Flute in Sight of the Silver River

Gazing on Milky Way,on flute of jade I play

In bower and courtyard cold near the break of day.

Gone are sweet dreams in heavy quilt of bygone year;

A lonely bird on lonely tree shivers with fear.

Fragrance of moonlit bower spreads out with the rain;

Flickering candle flame and frost sing the retrain.

Why should you go on crane divine to Heaven high?

The music played by fairies would bring you to the sky.

Note:The last line says in conclusion that the music played by fairies would bring a lonely heart to the sky as a crane divine does.

Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Parting at Morning on the Wooden Bridge

The Milky Way fades over the high city wall;

The parting pavilion overlooks the rippling stream.

The fairy riding a carp goes up the waterfall,

Leaving the lotus bloom shed red tears in her dream.

Note:The poet describes the parting of two lovers at dawn,comparing the one who leaves to a fairy and the other who stays to a lotus flower.
