The shape of the moon is often crescent and seldom full. Therefore, ancient Chinese people created the character with the shape of a half moon. The moon has a unique significance in Chinese people’s mind. “The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane; people may have sorrow or joy, be near or far apart.” The change of the moon reminds people of the change of life. People always miss their families when the moon changes its shape. The full moon also symbolizes the reunion of the family. August 15th in the Chinese lunar calendar is the Moon Festival. All family members get together to appreciate the beauty of the full moon and have moon cakes, which are a kind of full-moon-shaped dessert.
