《弟子规》 with English Translations

The “Di Zi Gui” is a three character rhyme poem written by the Qing Dynasty educator Li Yuxiu. It is a standard of living for students compiled based on the teachings of Confucius, and its content adopts the sixth article of the “Learning and Writing” section of the Analects: “When disciples enter, they are filial; when they leave, they are brotherly; when they enter, they are sincere and faithful; when they love others, they are kind and benevolent. When they have spare capacity, they learn literature.” It is compiled in three characters, one sentence, two sentences, and one rhyme. The full text consists of 360 sentences and 1080 words. The core idea is Confucianism’s filial piety, brotherly love, and benevolence.

Without putting into your practice physically and earnestly

What you learn from books,

You’ll become a person who is superficially clever.

How can you in your lifetime be a success?

If you only do practical things physically and earnestly

Without reading any books,

You’ll be stubborn persisting in your opinions,

And of the truth you’ll be in complete ignorance.

The methods for reading books

Mainly include the three uses:

The uses of your mind, your eyes and your mouth

Must be really carried into your practice.

When you just begin reading this book,

You should not yearn for that one.

Until your reading of this book is done

You must not begin reading that one.

Room should be left when you draw up a plan for reading

Although you must study hard constantly.

So long as you make constant efforts,

Finally you’ll understand everything like seeing the light suddenly.

If you have doubts and questions,

You should timely take reading notes.

Then you should modestly consult others.

So that you can exactly answer the questions without any doubts.
