A Faithful Wife Longing for Her Husband in Spring

Your Northern grass must be like green silk thread;

Our Western mulberries have bent their head.

When your thoughts begin to turn homeward way,

My heart has long been breaking night and day.

To the intruding vernal wind I say:

“How dare you part the curtain of my bed!”

“Spring Thoughts” is a short poem by Li Bai describing a wife missing her husband. In mid-spring, mulberry leaves are lush. The wife, who is alone in Qin, is moved by the scenery. She hopes that her husband, who is stationed on the northern border, will return home soon. She thinks that when he sees the green spring grass, he will also miss his wife. The land of Yanbei is cold, and the spring grass grows late. When the mulberry trees in Qin are low and green, the grass is just growing. The husband has just started to miss his husband, but the wife has been missing him for a long time. Suddenly, the spring breeze blows open the curtains. The wife is overjoyed thinking that her husband has returned, but her joy is in vain. So she turns her joy into sorrow and blames the spring breeze for breaking into the room. This imaginary reproach vividly depicts the wife’s deep affection for her husband.
