Beautiful Ears
Sha Miannong

One quiet night he jumped into the river behind the village to take a swim. Just when he started to have fun, a UFO landed moiselessly by the riverside and an extraterrestrial, donning a helmet, walked out. Scared out of his wits by the sight, he crawled ashore and broke into a run without even putting on his clothes. The extraterrestrial overtook him in two or three big steps, stopped him, looked him up and down, and burst out laughing.
“No wonder your earthlings proclaim that the most beautiful clothing in the world is human skin.”
He loved his head to see his naked body under the moonlight and instinctively reached to cover the part below the belly. The extraterrestrial laughed even more loudly:
“Truth being told, the ugliest part of the human body is not down there; it is in your head, instead—your ears!”
With that the extraterrestrial returned to the UFO and took off.
The ugliest part of the human body is the ears? The walls of his home are covered with pictures, one of them being the Four Greatest Beauties of Ancient China. Oh, look at them, look at their ears; their old beauty is all gone. Yes, the harder he stared at their ears, the bigger they grew, and the uglier the Four Beauties became. Indeed, they all became cats!
It suddenly dawned on him why so many poets in the world had poured their hearts into describing the beauty of human eyes, mouths, noses—almond eyes, peachy lips, classic, well-sculpted nose—and into celebrating human hair, chin, teeth … yet no one had ever bothered with describing how beautiful ears were!
He heard a laugh escaping his lips. We humans are probably making fun of ourselves. The ears are already ugly enough yet we want them to grow bigger, the bigger the better, the bigger the more fortune, the bigger the longer we live. Pooh! Pig have really big ears! … No wonder nowadays so many women wear earrings. It is to divert our attention … divert it downward. What’s more, people say double eyelids are prettier than single eyelids, yet although everybody’s ears are “double lids,” why hasn’t anybody said ears are pretty?
Once home, he looked at himself in the mirror and gazed hard at his ears. What do they look like? Like … two question marks hanging from both sides of his head, like handles of an earthen pot, like two holes in a mountain, like pickled radish …
How could he bear the sight of himself with a pair of ugliest ears! It occurred to him that some young women, unhappy with their thick eyebrows, would shave them completely and paint much slenderer ones instead; some obese people would even go under the knife to remove the extra fat in their bodies; one Sweden women soccer star, Pea Sundhage, even had her breasts revoke in order to run like fierce wind in the field.
So he cut his ears!
Nowadays, even though his hearing has weakened dramatically, he believes that he is much more beautiful than all the people between heaven and earth. Everyone else, however, has discovered, from the sight of his ear-less head, that the ears of everyone of us are so beautiful.
