Introduction
Today,I’d like to introduce a 1986 Hong Kong action film, Born to Defence (中华英雄zhōnghuá yīngxióng). It is marked the directorial debut of Jet Li (李连杰Li Liánjié), who also stars in the film. The film features fight choreography by Tsui Siu-Ming. The film is set in China following the end of World War II and the liberation of China. It centers on Jet Li’s character and his confrontations with navy sailors, who are portrayed as rapacious villains, from China’s ally, the United States, primarily in the boxing ring as Li’s character is an avid athlete.
Plot
In 1945, the Anti-Japanese War ended. Xiao Jie was a soldier who had experienced many battles. He came to Qingdao from the northeast and joined Zhang, the platoon leader who had been through life and death with him. Lao Zhang made a living by pulling a rickshaw. Although they were of different ages, they were as close as brothers. At that time, there were American troops stationed in Qingdao, and some of them were arrogant. Hans, an American officer, drove his car recklessly in the downtown area. Jie was injured in an attempt to save a Chinese wounded soldier. The crowd stopped Hans and burned the car to vent their anger. The wounded soldier invited Jie to the bar. Inside the bar, American boxer Bailey challenged Jie. Jie knocked Bailey down, and Bailey held a grudge. One day, Bailey took Lao Zhang’s car with the bar girl Xiao Rui. Lao Zhang was angry that Bailey openly flirted with Rui in the car, so he knocked the car down, and Bailey hit Lao Zhang and seriously injured him. Because Bailey had always wanted to take revenge, he made a plan to make Jie a punching target. Seeing this, Hans thought it was against the style of a soldier, so Hans challenged Jie himself. As the Chinese and American soldiers who watched the war were infected by the tragic fight between Hans and Jie, it turned into a group fight. Bailey wanted to kill Jie in the chaos, but Rui was saved by him. Jie learned at Rui’s house that Rui was Lao Zhang’s daughter, but Lao Zhang refused to recognize her. Jie finally reunited the father and daughter. Unexpectedly, Rui was kidnapped by Bailey. As a result, Lao Zhang was shot dead by Bailey, and Rui also fell to his death. Jie wanted to take revenge, but was stopped by the police. Jie escaped from prison and led Hans and Bailey to the factory, where he was severely punished and Bailey was sent to the furnace. Jie only left Hans a way out.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Jie Zai (played by Jet Li) returned to his hometown and found that his family was broken and he went to join his comrade Lao Zhang. Because he couldn’t stand what the American soldiers did in China, he fought against the American soldiers. The American soldiers confronted Jie Zai tit for tat and even poisoned the family of Jie Zai’s comrade Lao Zhang. Jie Zai fought a life-and-death struggle with the American soldiers with resentment.
