Ching An: Written on the Painting "Cold River Snow" ~ 《题寒江钓雪图》 敬安 with English Translations

“Inscription on Fishing in the Snow on a Cold River” is a poem inscribed on a painting, written in the tenth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1884), and is one of the author’s early representative works. The painting’s theme is obviously taken from Liu Zongyuan’s poem “Snow on the River”, which reads “A lone old man in a straw hat and raincoat is fishing in the snow on a cold river alone in a boat”, but Shi’s inscription on the painting is quite different from Liu’s poem.

Written on the Painting “Cold River Snow”

Ching An

Dropped a hook, east of Plankbridge.
Now snow weighs down his straw rain gear.
It’s freezing.
The River’s so cold the water’s stopped running:
fish nibble the shadows of plum blossoms.
