Cui Tu: Thoughts for Home ~ 《旅怀》 崔涂 with English Translations

“Traveling Thoughts” is a seven-character poem written by Cui Tu in the Tang Dynasty. The poem describes the ruthlessness of falling flowers and flowing water, what the poet saw when he went to Chu, the fact that there was no reply to the letters he sent back to his hometown from a foreign land, the white hair on the temples of the traveler, and the poet’s feeling of not wanting to go home but missing home.

Thoughts for Home

Cui Tu

Water flows and flowers fade mercilessly alike,
And I send East Wind beyond Chucheng.
In a fond dream, I see my home thousands of miles afar,
Yet when I wake up was a cuckoo in my sight on a twig and the moon at midnight.
Not a letter from home for years,
And time turns my hair grey on temples.
Home I return not. If I do,
Could not the magnificent scene of Five Lakes be mine?
