Favor Me Not Tune: “Dreaming of the South” ~ 《望江南·莫攀我》 with English Translations

Favor Me Not Tune: "Dreaming of the South" ~ 《望江南·莫攀我》 with English Translations

“Looking at Jiangnan·Mo Panwo” is a Dunhuang song ci, which was written in the Tang Dynasty. This ci is written in the voice of a prostitute, advising men not to be too sentimental, and using a willow tree as a metaphor to show her miserable situation of being a prostitute. One theory is that this ci is a strong protest of prostitutes against men who play with them at will.

Favor Me Not
Tune: “Dreaming of the South”

Anonymous

Favor me not,
Or you’re silly.
I am a plaything only
To be loved momentarily,
Just like a willow tree by the Qujiang River
Visited or damaged by one after another.
