Han Shan: Burial ~ 《桃花欲经夏》 寒山 with English Translations

Hanshan (birth and death years unknown), courtesy name and pseudonym unknown, was a native of Chang’an (now Xi’an, Shaanxi) during the Tang Dynasty. Born into an official family, he failed in many imperial examinations and later became a monk. After the age of 30, he lived in seclusion in Mount Tiantai in eastern Zhejiang and lived to be over 100 years old. Yan Zhenfei’s “Study on Hanshanzi’s Life” uses a large amount of historical materials such as “Northern History” and “Book of Sui” and Hanshan’s poems to verify that Hanshan was Yang Wen, the son of Yang Zan, a descendant of the Sui royal family. Due to jealousy and exclusion in the royal family and the influence of Buddhist thought, he became a monk and lived in seclusion in the cold rocks of Mount Tiantai, calling himself Hanshan.

Burial

Han Shan

Peach blossoms yearn for a summer’s life,
Shivering before a slight breeze, paling
In each descent of the moon. Of all the ancients,
Not one wakes when a bough stirs.
Leaves of my book curl, and the edges brown
In the fire that livens my mother’s ashes.
When I stumble my feet raise dust
Where once the greenest sea rolled.
