He Shen: Impromptu Lines Composed ~ 和珅·《偶书》 with English Translations

Heshun’s “Book of Admonitions” is a poem rich in philosophy and life insights. Through concise and clear language, it expresses the poet’s profound insight into human relationships and worldly affairs, as well as his thoughts on self-cultivation.

Impromptu Lines Composed

He Shen

Face, wrinkleless, yet wrinkled,

Enjoy yourself in the Book of Poetry as it’s twinkled.

The ebb and flow of life is like the catkins flying,

The vicissitudes of the world is like a boat drifting.

East or west, it shows no best,

True of false, overweening should be at rest.

Buddha or immortal, it’s self-accomplished,

Which proves the perfect-out-of-practice unpolished.
