及至重阳天也霁，催醉，鬼门关外蜀江前。
莫笑老翁犹气岸，君看，几人黄菊上华颠？

Rainy Days
Ten thousand li away in Qian Zhong,
it rained like the sky was leaking.
Staying inside the house all the time
as if I have been on a boat ride.
On this Double Nine Festival Day,
we finally can see a blue and clear sky.
I feel the urge to drink before the Shu River
or the Devil gate outside.
Don’t laugh at this old man
who still has a lot of pride.
Look, how many old men would still
insert yellow mums
into their temple hair in white?
I can still chase southward the two Xies
on the Horse-Show stage.
When it comes to rapid shooting with arrows,
I am as good as those ancient heroes.

Huang Tingjian (1045.8.9-1105.5.24), courtesy name Luzhi, nicknamed Valley Taoist, later nicknamed Fu Weng, was born in Fenning, Hongzhou (now Xiushui County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province). He was a famous writer and calligrapher in the Northern Song Dynasty. The founder of the Jiangxi Poetry School at that time, together with Du Fu, Chen Shidao and Chen Yuyi, was known as the “one ancestor and three sects” (Huang Tingjian was one of them). Together with Zhang Lei, Chao Buzhi, and Qin Guan, they all studied under Su Shi’s sect, and they were collectively known as the “Four Scholars of the Su School”. During his lifetime, he was as famous as Su Shi and was known as “Su Huang” in the world. He is the author of “Valley Ci”, and Huang Tingjian’s calligraphy is also unique, and he is one of the “Four Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty”.
