Su Shi Poem: Joy of Eternal Union Passing the Seven-league Shallows –

Joy of Eternal Union
Passing the Seven-league Shallows

Su Shi
A leaflike boat goes light;
At dripping oars wild geese take fright.
Under a sky serene
Clear shadows float on calm waves green.
Among the mirrored water grass fish play
And egrets dot the riverbank mist-grey.
Thus I go past
The sandy brook flowing fast,
The frosted brook cold,
The moonlit brook bright to behold.
Hill upon hill is a picturesque scene;
Bend after bend looks like a screen.
I recall those far-away years:
The hermit wasted his life till he grew old;
The emperor shared the same dream with his peers.
Then as now, their fame was left out in the cold.
Only the distant hills outspread
Till they’re unseen,
The cloud-crowned hills look disheveled
And dawnlit hills so green.

注释:
The poet describes the beauty of nature and his detachment after he left the capital. The hermit refers to Yan Guang who fished at the Seven-league Shallows for he would refuse the offer of a high post from his former schoolmate, who became the first emperor (6BC-AD57) of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

“Joy of Eternal Union Passing the Seven-league Shallows” is a lyric by Su Shi, a writer of the Song Dynasty. This lyric describes the beautiful scenery of Qilise, expressing the author’s love for the water town in the south of the Yangtze River, and also revealing the philosophy of life that merit and fame are not important, but rivers and mountains are always there. The first six lines of the first piece describe the beauty of the clear and tranquil river, and the last three lines write about the stream from different angles; the first two lines of the second piece write about the mountain, and in the middle, he inserts a discussion and emotion, and finally concludes with the mountain. The whole lyric perfectly combines the “quiet beauty” of the boat on the water and the “dynamic beauty” of the change of time and space, with clear and beautiful language and a wide and remote mood, containing both beautiful images and profound philosophies.
