This poem was probably written on the way to Huizhou, and was titled “To My Wife”, and was sent to his wife. His mood after the separation, the so-called “sadness and loss of soul”, is fully and implicitly expressed in this short poem.
这首诗可能作于诗人赴慧州途中，题为《寄内》，是寄给妻子的诗。他的别后心情，所谓“黯然消魂”者，在这首小诗里有充分而含蓄的表现。

Let me try to describe to you a scene of the journey,
and you will see what has informed my heart since our parting:
the sun setting, few stragglers trudging,
