Lang Shiyuan: Viewing South of the Bailin Temple ~《柏林寺南望》 郎士元 with English Translations

“Looking South from Berlin Temple” is a work by Tang Dynasty poet Lang Shiyuan. This poem describes the beautiful and elegant mountain peaks where Berlin Temple is located, and contains the poet’s joy and comfort in nature. The first sentence describes the sound of the temple bells heard in the boat, showing the clear air; the second sentence describes walking along the pine path after landing to reach the mountain temple, showing the quiet location. The last two sentences look far away after the rain, and the clouds are like a landscape painting of the Mi family, and the artistic conception is about to emerge. Although the intention is to describe the scenery, there are traces of people, people’s feelings, and people’s interests everywhere. The whole poem integrates emotion with scenery, creating an artistic realm of “poetic emotion and painting”.

Viewing South of the Bailin Temple

Lang Shiyuan

The pealing bell of the temple can be heard far from the creek,
Mooring the boat by the trail I pass through pine groves thick.
The floating clouds wander over the green hill as the rain ceases,
The peaks full of charm as if painted by a hand with ease.
