Ascending Taibai Peak
Li Bai
Ascending Taibai Peak from the west,
I reach the summit in the sunset.
The morning star speaks to me,
Opening the gate of Heaven.
I wish to go with the wind,
Emerge from the floating clouds,
Raise my hand to touch the moon
And travel over all the mountains.
Once I have left Wugong,
When shall I return again?

Ascending the Snow-White Peak1
Li Bai
Ascending from the west the Peak Snow-White,
Not till the sun goes down I reach its height.
The snow-white Mourning Star tells me to wait
Until he opens the Celestial Gate.
I wish to ride cold wind and floating cloud
To touch the moon and dwarf all mountains proud.
But once I left behind the Western land,
Could I return to the summit where I stand?
1. Or the Great White Mountain in Shanxi Province.

“Climbing Taibai Peak” is a work by Li Bai, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem describes the author climbing Taibai Mountain and whispering to Taibai Star, and imagining a scene of wandering in the heavens. It vividly shows the majestic scenery of Taibai Mountain towering into the clouds, and implicitly expresses the poet’s dissatisfaction with the dark reality and his melancholy mood of not being able to realize his political ideals. The first two sentences point out the theme, using the effort to climb to highlight the height of Taibai Peak and show the poet’s brave spirit; the middle six sentences describe the artistic conception of traveling to the immortal world, expressing the poet’s ideal of pursuing freedom and yearning for light; the last two sentences suddenly turn, and the thoughts return to reality, reflecting the poet’s contradictory mood of leaving the world and entering the world. With the help of rich imagination, the whole poem vividly and tortuously reflects the poet’s thoughts and feelings, and the structure is ups and downs, jumping and changing, fully reflecting the characteristics of romanticism.
