On Hearing the Flute in Yellow Crane Tower
Li Bai
Since I was banished to the riverside town,
Looking westward, I’ ve found no home I’d call my own.
Hearing in Yellow Crane Tower the flute’s sad tune,
I seem to see mume blossoms fall in the fifth moon.
“Inscription on the North Pavilion Stele” is a work by the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai in his later years. This poem describes the author’s experience of listening to the flute while visiting the Yellow Crane Tower, expressing the poet’s full sense of exile and leaving his country. The poem has four sentences. The first two sentences describe the author’s life experiences and moods, capturing the typical action of “looking west” and describing it, vividly expressing the nostalgia for the imperial capital and the sorrow of “looking” but “not seeing”; the last two sentences are the theme, written about listening to the flute on the Yellow Crane Tower, and the desolate scene of “plum blossoms falling in Jiangcheng in May” is transformed from the sound of the flute, using the scenery to express emotions, making the previous and subsequent scenes complement each other, and the combination is infinite.
