Li Ching Chao: The Late Spring Days ~ 《春残》 李清照 with English Translations

“Spring is Gone” was written by Li Qingzhao, an outstanding female poet of the Song Dynasty, when she was living in a place after she moved south. This poem is contrary to the vigorous writing style of most of Li’s poems, and adopts an elegant and delicate expression. The poem is narrated in a plain way, describing the scene of late spring, and no rare allusions are used. The year of this poem is unknown, but from the poetic meaning, it is a portrayal of Li Qingzhao’s life in her later years. From the title “Spring is Gone”, the chirping of swallows, and roses, it can be seen that the writing time was in the late spring of a certain year after Li Qingzhao moved south. From the homesickness, it can also be seen that Li Qingzhao was living in a place in the south. It was a late spring season, and Li Qingzhao, who was living away from home, wrote this poem in homesickness and loneliness.

The Late Spring Days

Li Ching Chao

Can’t understand why keep missing home in late spring,
Combing hair during sick days simply prolongs my woes;
Swallows are chatting all day long in the house beams,
While breeze carries fragrance of roses by the screen.
