“Bamboo House” is a seven-character quatrain written by Li Jiayou, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem expresses a feeling of abandoning worldly affairs and loving to live alone and a leisurely and contented attitude towards life by describing the comfort of the bamboo house and the actions of the owner. The first sentence summarizes the idleness of the owner of the bamboo house, the second sentence specifically describes the owner’s “leisure” through the action of taking bamboo to build the house, the third sentence describes the comfort and coolness of the bamboo house through contrast, and the last sentence describes the owner’s leisurely life in the bamboo house. Where I sleep at leisure with gulls in the water near by,
And it’s needless to use any fan, for there’s a cool south breeze.
