Drinking by the Tungting Lake
(One of Three Poems)

Li Pai
I heard the sound of oars
which seemed to me to be
like music; and it was as if
we were on the moon going home;
only the white gulls do not
leave us, flying low over
our table of feast dishes.

“Three Poems after Drunkenness While Accompanying Uncle Shilang on a Tour of Dongting Lake” is a collection of poems by Li Bai, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. The last poem uses a unique fantasy to remove the ups and downs of life and to use endless drunkenness to wash away the melancholy in the heart. The whole poem is clearly structured and interconnected, and it is very coherent. By drinking and reciting poems to dispel sorrow, Li Bai dispels the eternal sorrow and anger in his heart for decades of unfulfilled ambitions, and the disillusionment after escaping death in his later years.
