To the Pavilion for Washing Feet
Li Pai
A wide road leading to Kushu[1]
and erected by it a little pavilion;
fronting which is an ancient
well, with a stone bench beside;
here lasses coming down from
gathering firewood, stop a while
and wash their pretty feet, then
too, do those who are weary with
the road, rest and put down their loads;
there I sit also looking
over to Pailuchou[2] across the reeds
that gleam like frost in the morning;
now I farewell you, both
going our different ways, tear
in our eyes.
[1]. Kushu, near Tangtu in Anhwei.
[2]. Pailuchou, White Heron Island, southwest of Nanking.
“The Foot-washing Pavilion” is a work by Li Bai, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem is a farewell poem, and there seems to be something missing in the title. It begins with the farewell location; then describes the surrounding environment, blending the scene with the mood; and finally describes the reluctance to part at the time of parting, reflecting the deep affection between the fareweller and the traveler.
