“Farewell to Wei Wan in Beijing” is a work by Li Qi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem is intended to express the emotion of parting. The first couplet uses the inverted halberd method to point out that before departure, the light frost has just fallen and the late autumn is bleak; the second couplet describes the departure from autumn, and the traveler is sad when facing the mountains and clouds; the third couplet introduces the autumn scenery of Chang’an, implying that this place cannot be stayed for long; the last couplet, with the demeanor of an elder, advises Wei Wan that although Chang’an is fun, he should not waste his time and should seize the opportunity to achieve something. The poet combines narrative, description, and lyricism, and imagines and experiences the hardships of his friend’s journey with his own mood, showing the deep friendship between the poet and his friend, expressing the poet’s feelings, and exhorting his friend in time. The whole poem is natural and sincere, with deep feelings and long meanings, and the choice of words and sentences is especially praised by later generations.
Seeing Wei Wan Off to the Capital
Li Qi
On frosty morn floats the wanderer’s parting song,
Accompanying you across the river all along.
Can you bear the sad strains of wild geese flying past
When, grieved in cloudy mountains, you must travel fast?
Yellowing leaves around the pass hear winter’s wails,
The Royal Park at dusk resounds with washing-flails.
Do not take Changan for a capital of pleasure
Wherein to idle time away—a fleeting treasure!
