A Palace Poem

Imperial favor flows like eastward running stream;

When won,it brings tear for loss;when lost,it brings woe.

Don’t sing before winecups the Fallen Blossom’s Dream,

For from Western Palace the cold wind will soon blow.

Note:The last two lines might serve as a warning against those who have won the imperial favor.

This poem is similar to “Palace Prostitute” in meaning, and can be called a sister poem. It was written to ridicule the favored people of the Niu Party. The first and second sentences say that the emperor’s favor is like a river flowing eastward day and night, and no one can keep it. Power can be gained or lost, and the fear of gain and loss is a common problem for these people. The third and fourth sentences warn the favored people not to get carried away and should wake up.
