The poet incorporates the withered lotus, dried lotus and decayed lotus into the poetic imagery from a unique perspective, giving them new connotations. After his beloved wife passed away, the poet heard the sound of a flute late at night, and his heart was instantly filled with sorrow, adding an infinite sense of sadness. The image of lotus is a portrayal of the poet’s inner loneliness and desolation. This poem was written by Li Shangyin when he stayed at his father-in-law’s house after his wife passed away. The old people are gone, things have changed, and the future is blurred like a lonely wild goose. The poet’s sadness overflows from the poem.
Night Chill
Li Shang-yin
Trees surround a wide pool, the moon casts many shadows;
Beyond the wind-blown vine, in the village and on the bank,
the pounding of wash and the sounds of the flute.
In the west pavilion, the kingfisher quilt leaves a fragrance that fades;
All through the night, my sorrow turns toward the wilted lotus.
