The image of lotus is a portrayal of the poet’s inner loneliness and desolation. This poem was written by Li Shangyin when he stayed at his father-in-law’s house after his wife passed away. The old people are gone, things have changed, and the future is blurred like a lonely wild goose. The poet’s sadness overflows from the poem.
