Liu Changqing was born in Hejian (now part of Hebei) during the Tang Dynasty, and some say he was from Xuancheng (now part of Anhui). Hejian was his county magistrate and his courtesy name was Wenfang. This poem is a gift to veteran Li Zhongcheng, praising him for his long service in the sand, loyalty and bravery to the country, and lamenting his plight as a wanderer in old age. The first couplet begins by stating that Li was once the commander of a 100000 strong army, but has since become a wanderer in old age; 3、 The couplet states that he is honest, dedicated, and loyal to his duties; At the end of the couplet, it is written that Jianghan is vast and old, and what do you want? The entire poem expresses infinite sympathy towards the veteran who has been on the battlefield for a long time and fell into Jianghan late.
刘长卿，唐河间（现属河北）人，一说宣城（现属安徽）人，河间为其郡望，字文房。这首诗是赠送退伍军人李中丞，赞扬他久经沙声，忠勇为国，感伤他老来流落的境遇。首联先写李氏曾是十万大军将帅，而老来流落；三、四两联写他廉洁奉公和忠心耿耿；末联写江汉茫茫，年纪老迈，将“欲何之”？全诗对久经沙场，晚沦江汉的老将，寄予无限的同情。
