“Huanxisha: After Awakening from the Wine, the Fragrance Dissipates and the Sorrow is Overwhelming” is a poem by Nalan Xingde, a poet of the Qing Dynasty. This poem is a work of lovesickness, depicting a sentimental and helpless mood, and expressing the poet’s longing for his partner. In the 16th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1678), the poet’s first wife, Lu, passed away suddenly. She was the most important person in the poet’s life. The sudden death of his wife dealt a huge blow to the poet, causing him to fall into sorrow for a long time and unable to extricate himself. The poem was created by the poet when he was paying tribute to his wife in the second year after her death.
