Pao Chao: From Weary Road: 18 Songs ~ 《拟行路难·其一》 鲍照 with English Translations

“Imitation of the Difficult Road” is the first of the “Eighteen Imitations of the Difficult Road” written by Bao Zhao, an outstanding poet of the Southern Dynasties. This poem mainly laments that time flies and youth grow old, and wants to get rid of all worries and enjoy life in time, with a relatively negative thought. The poet persuades others to relieve their worries by giving them wine and carved zithers. He does not talk about himself throughout the poem, but actually fully expresses his inner feelings by comforting others. The words are rich and gorgeous, the rhymes are beautiful and harmonious, and it is very distinctive in art.

From Weary Road: 18 Songs

Pao Chao

I

To you, fine wine in gold cup,
Carved lute in jade and shell case,
Feather-curtains of seven-colored hibiscus,
Brocade quilt of nine-flowered vines.
Rosy cheeks fade: dusk closes in.
Cold light revolves, about to sink.
Please cut your sorrows, thin your thoughts
And listen to my beat to the “Weary Road”
Do you not see the Terraces of Cypress Beam and Brazen Bird?
How now to hear the clear notes of those ancient flutes?
