A Moonlit Night in the Mountains
Liu Yin
So full of gloomy thoughts, I’m desolate and drear;
At dead of night I face the empty mountains high.
The cliffs are whitened by the frost of autumn clear;
The moon emerges above the clouds flooding the sky.
The rocky valley echoes with my stirring strain;
My shadow trembles in the stream studd’d with starlight.
Drunken, I seem to hear the ape say to the crane:
For hundred years the world’s not so fair as tonight!
This poem “Moonlit Evening in the Mountains” was written by the Yuan Dynasty poet Liu Yin, depicting the tranquility and profound beauty of moonlit nights in the mountains.
The opening line of the poem “Full of Thoughts from Xiao Xiao, Facing the Empty Mountains at Night” creates a lonely and profound atmosphere. The poet’s heart is filled with thoughts, facing the empty mountains and forests alone. As the night deepens, it adds a touch of loneliness. Here, “Xiao Xiao” not only refers to the sound of the wind blowing grass, but also implies the poet’s inner melancholy and loneliness.
