A Songster on West Lake[1]
Dai Biaoyuan
Peonies pink or violet embellish spring;
Beside the music score lie clappers with red string.
A white-haired man with cup of wine on southern shore,
Nobody knows he was the songster all adore.

[1]After the downfall of the Southern Song Dynasty, the poet regretted that the famous songster became unknown even on West Lake.
This poem “Feeling the Old Singer” was written by the poet Dai Biaoyuan in the late Song and early Yuan dynasties. It creates a nostalgic atmosphere through the flourishing spring scenery of peonies and red beans, as well as the beauty of sandalwood and vermilion silk music. The poem depicts the scene of the old singer drinking in Jiangnan with the phrase “a bottle of wine with a white head”, while “no one knows it’s the Year of the Plum Turtle” implies that although the singer is skilled, he is no longer recognized by others, revealing a sense of worldly changes and the fading of heroes. The language of the whole poem is concise, and the emotions are deep. Through contrast and symbolic techniques, it expresses nostalgia for the beautiful times in the past and profound reflection on the impermanence of life.
