Going Alone
Fang Yizhi[1]
Dispersed are my companions dear;
I go to the woods for my part.
I’ve changed my name thrice in a year;
Nine words out of ten gnaw my heart.
I’m used to hear the news of war;
My grief’s deepened by wind and rain.
It is not hard to be no more;
But my friend’s death would cause more pain.

[1]The poet was a loyalist to the Ming Dynasty, failed to overthrow the Qing Dynasty with his friends and retired to a temple in the woods.
“Going Alone” is a poem written by Fang Yizhi, a poet in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The first couplet of the poem describes how his former friends who shared the same ideals have dispersed, and how he went in and out of the mountains alone, feeling lonely and alone; the middle two couplets describe the difficult situation and the painful mood; the last couplet echoes the first couplet, highlighting the loneliness of losing his soulmate. This poem expresses the author’s extreme grief for being alone because of the destruction of his country and the ruin of his family. The whole poem has a heavy tone and profound meaning.
