On Leaving Wuchang[1]
Jie Xisi
On going home, none will delay;
But I dislike to start my way.
I long for home when the year ends;
Staying abroad long, I’ve new friends.
Standing, I gaze on river’s flow;
And see the waves but homeward go.
注释:
[1]On going homeward towards Fengcheng in Jiangxi, the poet was reluctant to leave his new friends in Wuchang.
“Farewell to Wuchang” is a five-character ancient poem written by Jie Xisi, a writer in the Yuan Dynasty. The first two lines of the poem point out the contradiction between the longing for home and the worry about returning; the third and fourth lines are the specific and deepening of this contradiction; the last two lines, by expressing the feelings through the scenery, integrate the unresolved sorrow into the surging river flowing eastward, expressing the poet’s complex feelings when returning home from a trip. The whole poem is clear in language, sincere in emotion, and very contagious.
