On Poetry
Zhao Yi
Li Bai and Du Fu’s verse[1] is read from mouth to mouth,
But now it cannot arouse our emotion new.
Talents emerge from age to age, from north to south,
To lead in verse for hundred years each has his due.

[1]Li Bai (701—762) was the greatest romantic poet and Du Fu (712—770) was the greatest realistic poet of the Tang Dynasty.
“On Poetry” is a set of seven-character quatrain poems written by Zhao Yi, a poet in the Qing Dynasty. There are five poems in total (four poems in one book). In this set of poems, the poet expressed his literary ideas in the form of poetry. The first poem is about creation, advocating that poetry is more valuable than creation. The second poem says that every dynasty will have outstanding poets who create works with the characteristics of the times, and especially emphasizes that poetry is more valuable than innovation. The third poem is about criticism and appreciation, emphasizing that one should have independent opinions on problems and should not blindly follow others. The fourth poem points out that poetry should not be deliberately refined or overly focused on form, but should be natural and have its own true feelings. The fifth poem affirms the view that “poetry is only refined after it is poor”, and ridicules the “greed” of some poets who “want to be good at poetry but are afraid of being poor”.
