On Pushing Open the Window
Yuan Mei
All night long rain fell thick;
Doors closed, I stay inside.
At dawn hills come love-sick;
Through windows opened wide.
“Pushing the Window” is a five-character quatrain written by Yuan Mei, a poet in the Qing Dynasty. The first two lines of the poem reveal the poet’s understanding of the sinister officialdom and his regret for his unsuccessful career; the last two lines describe the poet’s spontaneous “joy” after pushing the window. This poem is ingeniously conceived, with appropriate metaphors, and sincere and intimate, expressing the poet’s disgust for officialdom and his love for mountains, rivers and countryside.
