Feng Xiaoqing Poem: On Reading The Peony Pavilion –

On Reading The Peony Pavilion[1]

Feng Xiaoqing[2]

How can I bear to hear cold rain beat window panes?

I light my lamp to read Pavilion of Peony.

The beauty died of love, in dreams she still remains;

She’s not so lonely, heart-broken as dreamless me.

注释:

[1]See Tang Xianzu’s Dream in Peony Pavilion.

[2]Feng Xiaoqing was mistress of Feng Qianqiu whose wife forbade her to leave a lonely islet in West Lake. She died at the age of 18 and was buried by the lakeside.
