Pillowing on a Stone
Gao Panlong
As running stream my heart is clean;
Like floating cloud my body’s light.
In silence deep of mountains green;
The temple bell rings out of sight.
“The Pillow Stone” is a five-character quatrain. The first two lines of the poem use natural scenes as metaphors to express the poet’s lofty feelings of being detached from the world and having a clear mind; the last two lines further describe the quiet evening scene in the deep mountains. The whole poem, through the description of natural scenes and the expression of inner emotions, shows the poet’s lofty realm of pursuing spiritual freedom and tranquility, giving people a feeling of freshness, unworldliness, emptiness and clarity.
