雨过不知龙去处，
一池草色万蛙鸣。

Pouring Rain on the 19th Day of the 5th Moon
Liu Ji
The driving wind and rain pour on the city high;
The thunder weighed down by heavy clouds rumbles long.
After the rain we know not where the dragons[1] fly;
A pool green with grass echoes with frogs’ choral song.

[1]The dragons were believed in ancient China to be in charge of rain.
“Heavy Rain on May 19th” is a seven-character quatrain written by the Ming Dynasty poet Liu Ji. This seven-character quatrain describes the scene before and after the heavy rain. The first two lines are about wind, rain, thunder and lightning, and the weather is magnificent; the second two lines are about the rain stopping and the wind stopping, which is refreshing and quiet. The contrast between the two is sharp. The poet expresses his feelings through the description of natural wind and rain, and expresses a certain philosophy of life: after the wind and rain, the scenery will be particularly beautiful; after encountering setbacks and overcoming them, life will feel more beautiful.
