The Mountainside Temple
Li Dongyang
The frowning peak overlooks the southern riverside;
A serpentine footpath winds up the spiral hill.
Two pathways meet among the pines and firs green-dyed;
Amid the wind and rain a lonely monk feels chill.
Flat sand and shallow grass stretch as far as the skies;
The town across the stream at sunset can be seen.
Northern and southern countries come into my eyes;
To hear the partridges sing alone on rails I lean.
“Visiting Yuelu Temple” is a seven-character regulated verse written by Li Dongyang, a poet in the Ming Dynasty. This poem mainly describes Yuelu Mountain. The first couplet describes the towering peaks of Yuelu Mountain, which spiral upwards. The second couplet describes the close view seen from Yuelu Mountain. The third couplet describes the distant view seen from Yuelu Mountain. The last couplet describes the feelings in the heart, implicitly expressing the author’s feelings of missing home and relatives. This poem goes from near to far, and then from far to near. Sometimes the close view and the distant view are intertwined, presenting a multi-layered complex picture.
