To the Mume Blossom
Gao Qi
You should dwell in the crystalline palace on high.
Who has planted you on southern shore far and nigh?
A hermit lives in mountains covered by snow white;
A beauty comes to the grove when the moon shines bright.
The shivering bamboo lends you its shadow slender;
The outspread moss would hide your fragrant petals tender.
Once the mume-lover gone, no more poet can please.
How long have you bloomed in the lonely vernal breeze?
Nine Poems on Plum Blossoms is a group of poems written by Gao Qi, a writer in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. This group of poems on plum blossoms portrays a group of plum blossoms. Each poem has the characteristics of being lonely and proud without being desolate and depressed, and pitying and cherishing plum blossoms without being sad and heartbroken. The whole group of poems skillfully uses allusions to personify plum blossoms and vividly portray their form and spirit. There are many poems about plum blossoms written by poets in the past dynasties. In comparison, these nine poems are unique in describing plum blossoms and are indeed remarkable.
