Night Rain “is a short poem written by Pu Songling, a literary figure in the Qing Dynasty, expressing the author’s lingering worries. The first two sentences, calling out the rainy night, suddenly enter a state of sorrow. The third sentence concretizes abstract melancholy, saying that the sound of rain is not as difficult to break as melancholy. Speaking of the sound of rain on the front side actually implies the opposite side. The description of melancholy on the side is more expressive than the sound of rain, making it more tangible, profound, and vivid. This is known as “poetry has its own truth that cannot be expressed, and requires counterattacks to reveal it”. The conclusion lingers on, leaving an endless aftertaste. Poetry is inspired by emotions, expressing one’s feelings directly, without embellishment or elegance. Its simple and natural style was unique at that time.
A Little Rainfall in the Night
Pu Songling
The endless night, like my sorrow, drags on and on;
Raindrops fall in threes and twos to the ground.
The pattering of rain, unlike my sorrow, may be spent;
Moonlight creeps in while I toss and turn in bed.
