Sailing to the South Lake by Chan Fang-sheng ~ 湛方生·《帆入南湖》 with English Translations

Sail into Nanhu “is a five character ancient poem created by the Eastern Jin Dynasty poet Zhan Fangsheng. The first four lines of this poem describe the scenery of lakes and mountains, while the middle two lines lead to profound contemplation. The last four sentences are a sigh of the infinite universe and the limited life. The whole poem not only expresses the author’s broad mindedness, but also expresses sincere joy and praise for the beautiful mountains and rivers of our motherland. This poem is simple and distant, although it involves mysteries, it has imagery and artistic conception, powerful and broad, and profound meaning.

Sailing to the South Lake

Chan Fang-sheng

P’eng-li commands three rivers.

Mount Lu masters other hills.

White sand cleans the waterway.

Green pines cover hanging crags.

This water: since when, its flow?

This mountain: since when, its being?

Man’s fate changes from this to that!

These forms alone stay forever.

Within the distant reach of the cosmos,

Past, present, in order, first, last.
