Introduction
Today,we are going to talk about a 2009 Hong Kong action crime drama thriller film, Shinjuku Incident (新宿事件Xīnsù shìjiàn). It is written and directed by Derek Yee, and also produced by and starring Jackie Chan (成龙Chéng Lóng). The film was distributed by Chan’s own film company, JCE Movies Limited (成龙英皇影业有限公司Chéng Lóng yīnghuáng yǐngyè yǒuxiàn gōngsī).
It was stated in many press reports (新闻报道xīnwén bàodào) that the genre of the film would be closer to drama, Film director Derek Yee said, “People are too familiar with the image of a fighting Jackie Chan. It’s time for him to move on to drama.”In a recent interview, Chan himself describes the film as, “maybe one percent action. Heavy drama.”
The film was originally to be released on 25 September 2008 but was delayed to the first quarter of 2009. It premiered at the 2009 Hong Kong International Film Festival and was released on 2 April 2009 in Hong Kong.
Plot
The story takes place in the 1990s. A tractor worker Tietou risked his life to sneak to Japan and decided to find his girlfriend Xiuxiu who went to Japan with a Japanese orphan. He took refuge with his friend Ajie from the same village in Japan, and lived under the same roof with other illegal immigrants, living a lower-class life in a developed society and doing rough work, but the pressure of life made it difficult for their dredging work to keep up with the rapid inflation of prices.
Just when Tietou gave up looking for Xiuxiu, he suddenly found that she had changed her name to Yuko and became the wife of Toshinari Eguchi, the vice president of the Japanese gang “Triad”. Tietou decided to settle down in Japan and improve his life. Later, he met Lili, who worked as a mama-san in a nightclub.
They could not engage in legitimate jobs in the local area, so Tietou persuaded Ajie to start illegal activities together to improve their quality of life, and learn Japanese in order to integrate into society and become educated people. Their group of people became more and more powerful, their lives gradually improved, and all the brothers regarded Tietou as their leader.
They manipulated the gambling machine guarded by the “Tainan Gang” and made a profit from it. Once, when the timid A-jie was helping his companions to guard the gambling machines, he was caught by Gao Jie, the boss of the “Tainan Gang” who saw through their tricks. Gao Jie chopped off A-jie’s right palm with a chestnut shovel, and since then, A-jie’s temperament has changed drastically. Tietou decided to avenge A-jie, and happened to find that Gao Jie wanted to kill Jiangkou, so he rescued Jiangkou. Although Jiangkou knew that Tietou and Yuko were old lovers, he still sympathized with Tietou and asked Tietou to kill the president of the triad for him. After the job was done, Jiangkou got him a Japanese ID card in return and gave him the territory of the Tainan Gang. After Tietou obtained the ID card, he planned to leave the crowd with Lili and open a small shop in other areas to do business, allowing A-jie and the others to continue his previous business. But his peaceful life was broken by Kitano, the policeman who had saved his life. Kitano warned Tietou that his fellow countrymen had committed many serious crimes. After being disabled, Ajie became bold and fierce. The police had set up a file “Shinjuku Incident” to investigate the criminal records of Chinese people, and regarded the gang that used to be with Tietou as the largest Chinese criminal organization in Japan.
After finding out the truth, Tietou decided to cooperate with Kitano. He hoped that all the brothers would turn back, but when everyone saw Tietou bringing Kitano, they mistakenly thought that he was going to betray all the brothers. At this time, Jiangkou was only interested in becoming the leader of the Japanese gang and wanted to kill Kitano and Tietou who had evidence of his crime. On the other hand, Jiangkou’s enemies held Yuko hostage, and her life was in danger…
Jiangkou, Ajie, Tietou, and Kitano met again. In addition, Gao Jie also brought a group of killers to kill Jiangkou. The five groups gathered to settle the old accounts once and for all, and a bloody fight was about to break out.
