Shudan: Buddhist Dancers ~ 《菩萨蛮》 舒亶 with English Translations

Shudan: Buddhist Dancers ~ 《菩萨蛮》 舒亶 with English Translations

“Bodhisattva Man: The Painted Boat Beats the Drum to Urge You to Leave” was written by the Song Dynasty poet Shu Tan and was selected into “Three Hundred Song Poems with Annotations by Tang Guizhang”. This is a work describing the feeling of parting, and the poem uses simple but not boring language to express the author’s unspeakable lovesickness.

Drumbeats on painted ship hasten you to depart;
Wine cups in high tower try to delay your start.
To start or to stay is hard to decide;
In the west river will soon rise the tide.
It is easy for the tide to come forth,
But we’ll be far apart, south and north.
We drink our wine cups dry today.
When can we again together stay?
