Songs of Autumn Pool
(XV)
My whitened hair would make a long, long cord,
As long as I am often bored.
I know not how the mirror bright
Reflects a head with hoarfrost white.[1]
Notes:
[1]with hoarfrost white=white with hoarfrost.
This is a typical poem famous for its exaggeration. The first sentence “white hair three thousand feet long” comes out of nowhere, making people feel confused as if they have seen a giant. The second sentence “sorrow is as long as this” points out that it is sorrow that makes the white hair grow so long. How deep must that sorrow be! The poet looked at himself in the mirror and was shocked. This is not a head full of white hair, but clearly withered grass that has been weathered by the frost! Where does this autumn frost come from? The whole poem ends abruptly, which makes people think deeply and reminds people of the poet’s weathered life.
