Sorrow of the Long Gate Palace - 李白《长门怨(二首其一)》 - Li Bai poems in chinese and english

Li Bai (701-December 762), whose name was Taibai, was named Qinglianjushi, also known as “The Immortal”. A great romantic poet in the Tang Dynasty, he was hailed as “The Immortal of Poetry” by future generations, and he was called “The Immortal of Poetry” together with Du Fu.

Sorrow of the Long Gate Palace[1]

(I)

The plough has turned around and hangs o’er Western Tower,

None but the fireflies sail the gloom of Golden Bower.

The lonely moon which peeps in Palace of Long Gate

Will shed more sorrow on the dweller desolate.

注释:

[1]The Long Gate Palace was the dwelling of a disfavored queen of the Han Dynasty.

Changmen Palace was the cold palace where Empress Chen of Emperor Wu of Han lived. Empress Chen’s nickname was A Jiao. When Emperor Wu of Han was young, he said: “If I could marry A Jiao, I would keep her in a golden house.” Therefore, there is a saying in later generations: “A Jiao is hidden in a golden house.” Unexpectedly, A Jiao was sent from the golden house to the cold palace, and Changmen Yuang became Cold Palace Yuang. This poem describes the scenery but not the people. The scenery in the golden house is bleak. There is only the Big Dipper slanting in the sky, and only fireflies can be seen on the ground. The bright moon casts a faint light, illuminating the deep palace of Changmen, which makes it look even more sad and desolate.
