“Heavy Rain in Youmei Hall” is a seven-character regulated verse written by Su Shi in the Song Dynasty. This poem vividly shows the spectacular scene of heavy rain coming from far away, across the river, and roaring. The first couplet very characteristically describes the atmosphere before the rain. When the thick clouds that cannot be dispelled piled up in the low sky, a thunderclap came out of the clouds, indicating that the heavy rain is coming. The three sentences of the second couplet are imagination, and the four sentences are personal experience. The two sentences of the third couplet specifically describe the heavy rain, comparing the West Lake to a small golden cup and the heavy rain to the sound of the 羯鼓. The last couplet describes the impression, a sudden whim, and associates it with the story of Li Bai. The poem is like a sketch painter improvising, copying the real scene of nature, showing the magnificent and majestic scenery of nature.

A clap of thunder under the visitors’ feet,
Massed clouds around too dense to sweep away;
A hurricane on the skyline whips up the sea,
And rain pelts down across the River Zhe.
With the sparkle of wine brimming over a golden goblet,
The din of a thousand drumsticks on leather drums,
Heaven splashes the poet’s face with water to wake him,
And the mermaid’s cave pours forth its treasures of jade and jasper.
