“Ru Meng Ling – Titled Huaishan Tower” is a poem written by Su Shi, a writer in the Song Dynasty. It was written in October of the fourth year of Xining reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song (1071). The first two sentences describe the magnificence and antiquity of Sizhou City, the third and fourth sentences describe the mood and scenery seen when looking at the south sky from afar, and the last three sentences are fictitious, imagining the scene when rushing to Songjiang the next night. The poem combines the nostalgia for the ancient monuments with the feeling of climbing the mountain. Although it is short, it is thought-provoking.
Dreamlike Song
On the Riverside Tower
Towers on city walls like peaks appear;
Below the walls flow rivers old and clear.
I raise my hand to greet the southern cloud on high
Only to find my friend as far apart
As the evening sky.
Broken’s my heart,
Broken’s my heart
To see another night
On Southern Stream a full moon bright.
