“Recalling the Past at Mianchi with Ziyou” is a work by Su Shi, a writer in the Song Dynasty. This poem expresses the melancholy of the uncertainty of life and the deep affection for the past. The first four lines use the footprints of wild geese in the snow and mud to compare life, and regard life as a long journey; the last four lines echo the title of “nostalgia” and use narrative to deepen the feeling of the footprints of wild geese in the snow and mud. The whole poem is turbulent and lively, with a free artistic conception, and is a famous poem among Su Shi’s seven-character regulated verses.
Recalling the Old Days at Mianchi
Su Shi
To what can we liken human life?
Perhaps to a wild swan’s footprints on mud or snow:
By chance its claws imprint the mud
Before it flies off at random, east or west.
The old monk is dead and a new pagoda built;
The old wall has crumbled, the poem we wrote on it gone.
Do you still remember this rugged mountain path,
The long way, or exhaustion and how the lame donkey brayed?
