Su Shi: To My Brother ~ 《寄子由》 苏轼 with English Translations

“On the 19th day of the 11th month of the Xinchou year, I wrote a poem to Ziyou outside the west gate of Zhengzhou and sent it to him” is a poem by Su Shi, a writer in the Song Dynasty. This is the earliest poem that Su Shi wrote to his younger brother Su Zhe, expressing the love between brothers and the sorrow of parting. This poem first describes the mood at the time of parting, then the longing for each other’s figure, then the bitter feelings and the passing of time, and finally the recollection of the past and the expectation of the future. The whole poem is full of deep feelings and twists and turns, fully expressing the inseparable love between the two brothers.

To My Brother

Su Shi

Written in the saddle on the nineteenth of the eleventh month of the year Xinchou, after seeing Ziyou off outside the West Gate of Zhengzhou.
Why, without wine, this drunken, dizzy feeling?
My heart is following the horseman home;
Your thoughts turn homeward now,
But what have I to cure my loneliness?
I climb a height for one last look at you—
Your black cap bobbing down the sunken road.
It is biting cold and your are thinly clad,
Riding your lean nag alone through the fading moonlight.
Passerby are singing, the stay-at-homes are merry;
My servants wonder why I look so sad.
I know life must have its partings,
But dread to think how quickly the years may pass.
I sit by my lamp in the cold, re-living the old days:
Remember, brother, our promise to listen together
To the patter of the rain at night again,
And never set your heart on official honors!
