“Autumn on the Fen River” is a work by the Tang Dynasty poet Su Yan. This poem describes the author’s surprise at the arrival of autumn on the Fen River, expressing his feelings of the lateness of the year, and also reflects the profound historical and cultural connotations of the Fen River area. The whole poem uses the expression of virtual and real, close and distant, seemingly bright but obscure, and choking to express the poet’s complex feelings. Although there are only 20 words, each word connects the past and the present, the artistic conception is implicit, the atmosphere is profound, and there is a sense of historical vicissitudes.
My Surprise at the Coming of Autumn on the Fen River
Su Ting
The north wind blows and scatters white clouds,
Crossing the Fen River I’ll have ten thousand li ride.
My heart sinks at the withering autumn sight,
Even I cannot bear to hear the autumn wind sough.
