Sun Ti: Stay Overnight at Yunmen Temple (1) ~ 《宿云门寺阁》 孙逖 with English Translations

“Staying at the Pavilion of Yunmen Temple” is a five-character regulated verse written by Tang Dynasty writer Sun Ti when he stayed overnight at Yunmen Temple. This poem describes the poet’s feelings of staying overnight at Yunmen Temple in a romantic style. The first couplet outlines a distant view of Yunmen Temple, points out the location of Yunmen Temple, and describes its environment and atmosphere; the second couplet describes the scene that the poet looked out the window after arriving at the place to stay; the two sentences of the third couplet, closely following “hanging lights” and “rolling up curtains”, describe what he saw when he looked around in bed; the last couplet describes the scene after dreaming. The whole poem has a rigorous structure. From a time perspective, it describes going to the temple, entering the pavilion, sleeping, and dreaming in sequence; from a spatial perspective, it first describes the panoramic view from a distance, then the exterior scene from inside the pavilion, and finally what is seen inside the pavilion, from the real scene to the virtual scene, fully setting off the antiquity of the temple, and the structure is quite ingenious.

Stay Overnight at Yunmen Temple (1)

The temple stands on the slope of the Eastern Hill (2);
As fair as fairyland are the views all around.
The thousand peaks appear dark when seen by lamplight;
Curtains rolled up, autumn cool (3) comes in without sound.
The pictures of swan-geese remain in the frescoes;
At night outside the window the dippers are found (4).
The heavenly way above seems quite near at hand—
The poet dreams that with the white clouds he’ll be skybound.

(1) The temple is built on the slope of Yunmen Hill.
(2) The Eastern Hill is another name of the hill where the temple is situated.
(3) The autumn cool comes from the five lakes into the guest room in the temple where the poet stays.
(4) The line implies that the temple is located rather high on the hill.
